What I Wore This Week

It’s been a while since I posted a “What I Wore”…mostly because law schools/law school professors are sadists who derive pleasure from watching 1L’s suffer. Ugh! But anyways, I figured I would stop being negligent (see, I’m even starting to blog like a lawyer) and update you guys on what’s shakin’ in my closet. Sidenote: I’ve added on some new writers to keep you guys entertained when I’m being a total slacker. Be looking out for them!

So here’s what I wore this week…

Monday

You guys know I love me some black. Monday was no exception. I wore a pair of black harem pants from Forever 21 over top a black shorts romper (also from Forever 21) and added some visual detail with a vintage beaded vest that I purchased from Goodwill a few years ago. I chose to play off my skin tone by completing the outfit with a pair of brown leather platform wedges.

Black romper – $24, Forever 21; Harem Pants, $8 – Forever 21; Beaded vest – $2, Goodwill; Leather Platform Wedges – $28, Buffalo Exchange

What I Wore This Week

This was a big week for me. It was my first week of law school! (…and my 25th birthday!) I’m super excited about this new phase of my life, but if you think that I’ll be trading in my fun, flirty digs for a stuffy, conservative new wardrobe…you’re sorely mistaken! You can just call me ‘Elle Woods’ from here on out. lol

I had a moment of panic when I got the email last week instructing me to arrive in “business casual” attire for the week, because honestly, I didn’t own a single thing that I felt fit that description. But when you have limited funds (you know how that broke grad student life is) and limited time to scrape things together…you get creative. I purchased a few staple pieces and mixed & matched the rest from items I already had in my wardrobe.

Here’s a recap from this week’s ‘Legally Blonde’ series…

DIY: Studded Shorts

Is it summer yet? No? Oh, well. It’s never too soon to start preparing. I’ve spent this week* working on a pair of studded shorts that will be perfect for summer.

*This DIY can be done in one day. It took me several days because I had a million things going on and I had to wait for the studs to arrive in the mail. (I ordered them from Amazon.)

I started by making a trip to what felt like every single Goodwill in NYC. I was specifically looking for “mom jeans” and you would be surprised how hard it is to find “mom jeans” in a size that most people are before they ever hit puberty. lol. Anywho…I finally found a pair that fit me in the waist they way I wanted them to.

$9.99 at Goodwill (25th St. & 6th Ave.)

I know you’re laughing right now at the fact that they’re too short. STOP! IT’S NOT FUNNY! Lol.

The first thing I did was cut the jeans into shorts. I wanted the final version of my shorts to have a cuff  so I cut them about 4 inches longer than the length I wanted.

And then I simply cuffed them twice.

Next I pinned the cuff down with straight pins to hold them in place while I placed a small stitch every couple of inches.

Once that was done, I decided that I wanted to give the shorts a quick acid wash to give them a bit of different look. See this previous post for instructions on how to acid wash.

After the acid wash was complete (and the studs came in the mail), I simply started to add them on to the shorts. Get creative with the design. You can do just a pocket, across the entire back and/or the entire front…whatever you choose. I decided to do just one side of the back and the smaller inside pocket of the front.

The studs are easy to apply and take very little time. Simply stick them through the fabric and fold over the prongs. You can do that with your fingers but if you want to make sure its really snug (or if your fingers start to hurt like mine did) use the edge of a quarter or even a key to fold down the prongs.

And just like that…you’re all done!

I also put rips on one side and studded the inside of the pocket so the studs show through.

I absolutely love these! I pranced around in them for hours before finally forcing myself to take them off. Lol. However, they were really difficult to photograph. Took me forever to find the right lighting and it’s still not perfect. But I promise to wear them the first day it’s warm enough to wear shorts and get you guys some really awesome photos. Scouts honor!

What I Bought Today

Today’s To Do List:

- Go to ConEd

- Pick up new NYU ID

- Visit Financial Aid

- Return/Exchange Living Room Curtains

No where on that list does it include stopping at either Aldo or Goodwill, but…THEY WERE RIGHT THERE! I couldn’t resist.

I always manage to catch good accessories sales at Aldo and today was no exception. I stopped by on my way to pick my new replacement ID at NYU and couldn’t resist buying these beautifully patterned scarves*. They just screamed “TURBAN!”

Aldo: $11.98 - BOGO*

I love the bright, natural patterns. They are also a lightweight material, so they can still be worn in this summer heat.

Don’t they make great turbans?!

I also got these cute wooden bangles. I opted for the square ones instead of the round ones because…well…you can find round bangles anywhere.

Aldo: $4.98

But the absolute best buy of the day were the two books I bought at Goodwill–He’s Just Not That Into You and L.A. Candy (by Lauren Conrad of The Hills). I got two $20, New York Times Bestselling books for .99/each!!!

FYI: I recommend every woman read He’s Just Not That Into You. It’s a hilarious (I’ve LOL’d at least 10x already), tell it like it is, account of how we [women] get in our own way sometimes. If he doesn’t call, if he never actually asks you out, if he “doesn’t wanna ruin the friendship”, or if he’s “too busy”…it’s not because he’s a bad guy, triflin’, a player, etc–and if he is it’s because you’re allowing him to be by accepting those excuses–HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU! Take your fabulousness elsewhere! xoxo
