STYLE FILE: “Fab for $50″

A few weekends ago I decided to take a little break from the demands of law school and make a trip to Atlanta for Homecoming at my alma mater, Spelman College. It was a quick weekend filled with lots of fun and reuniting with old friends. I even got to hang out with Christina of LoveBrownSugar and Jessica of Glamazons Blog, who were both experiencing their first HBCU homecoming.

I tweeted and Instagram’d lots of fun pics from that weekend, but this post in particular is about the outfit I wore to that Friday night’s Black Love  party. When I tweeted the picture, one of my followers pointed out that I had only spent $50 on the entire look and I have to admit, even I was like, “Whoa! I did only spend $50!” So why not turn that into a new blog segment, right? And what better place to start than where it all started!

During homecoming, most girls stick to the “short & tight” script, but I was kinda over that whole thing. I told a few people that I wanted to wear a long dress and they all gave me the “What does she think this is…prom?!” look. And you know what? It made me all the more determined to werk it out. Lol.

Get the deets…

I got this black, asymmetrical dress from KnowStyle for $20. I loved that the high neck, slinky silhouette and extra bit of leg action combined to create a sexy yet classy look.

Playing off my platinum blonde hair I opted for a pair of nude, suede peep toe pumps from Charlotte Russe. They were on sale for $15.

I wanted to edge it up just a little bit so I finished the look off with an oversized safety pin necklace that was also from KnowStyle. It was $16.

And just like that…I put this whole look together for a grand total of $51! Talk about a look for less!

What do you think?! Weigh in on my “Fab for $50″ look!

These girls are giving Sean Bankhead’s (@itsSeanBankhead) choreography the BIZNESS! I love the styling. I love the location(s). I love it all! #shoutout to the chick with the blonde fade aka Ms. Thicker than a Snicker…lol…she’s a BEAST!

On another note: This REALLY makes me miss Atlanta. :(

New Artist Spotlight: Jae-B

DOWNLOAD “No Sense” Here

Ever feel like your life makes NO SENSE?! Jae-B, Atlanta native and personal friend, did what he does best…he put his feelings to music. I came across this song of his today and hit him up immediately like, “Get that song to me…NOW!” The song is titled, “No Sense” and has a cool, laid back, Nappy Roots kinda feel. It’s the kinda song that makes you contemplate the meaning of life or something “deep” like that. LOL.

Jae-B was born November 11, 1986 and grew up on the Westside of Atlanta. He’s been doing music since he was 14 and says that he draws inspiration from artists like OutKast, B.I.G., Bone Thugs, Tupac & Marvin Gaye. When asked what he envisions for his music, he stated that “he hopes his music can motivate his audience to find themselves and be better people”.

I had to show some love to someone doing what they love and who is actually good at it. Lord knows, I’ve heard my fair share of people yelling on tracks and calling it music. *side eye*

A Man Who Understands a Woman’s Body

Yesterday I was walking through Perimeter Mall and saw a sign that brought the biggest smile to my face. And I know the people walking by me thought I had lost my mind standing there taking a picture of the wall…lol…but I just HAD to!

We are getting yet another Michael Kors store in Atlanta! (There’s one currently located in Lenox Mall.)

I swear this is a man understands every curve of a woman’s body. Impeccable!

Enough is E-DAMN-nough!

So last night there was yet ANOTHER shooting in the AUC. For those of you who don’t know there was a shooting early last month where one of my Spelman Sisters, Jasmine Lynn, was shot and killed by a stray bullet. I was shocked to find out early last week that there a had been an arrest made. Click here for story. I honestly didn’t think there would be. I figured after the media frenzy was over, things would go back to “normal” and the police would have very little pressure to solve the case. After all, to the general public, she was probably just some little black girl at an all black school in the middle of the ghetto. So hats off the Atlanta Police Department! But… To have this mess happen AGAIN in just a little over month is beyond ridiculous. Where is the fruit of the conversation that took place when Jasmine Lynn was taken from us? What good is talking about heightened security if you aren’t actually gonna follow through? This young man was merely walking back from the library after a night of studying only to be attacked at gunpoint. Click here for story. I just can’t take it. We face enough danger in the streets without having to suffer the same risks on campus. The AUC and the Atlanta police department need to do a much better job of working together to make our campuses as safe as possible. Hell, with the money we’re paying them I would think it’s the least they could do. I surely didn’t shell out nearly $95,000 to dodge bullets on my way to class. I could have stayed in Macon and done that FOR FREE!

We Prayed & God Answered!

So if you haven’t already heard…it’s flooding in Atlanta!!! It’s been raining pretty much none stop since last Tuesday and it’s due to continue raining until at least Sunday. This comes at an awkward time. After such a long and severe drought it seems that our prayers have been answered in tenfold. People’s homes are flooded [and needless to say, most people don't buy flood insurance in Atlanta], trees are collapsing, there was even a mall parking that collapsed last week. There have been 6 deaths reported so far. Initially I wasn’t that concerned, but after hearing about all the devastation it’s causing I’m starting to get a little scared. I was on the MARTA today and we were stuck in one place for about 30 mins because the tracks were flooded. Here’s a picture of I-20 that is COMPLETELY flooded.

Atlanta Flood 2009

I pray this rain stops soon, because Atlanta is in no way prepared to handle a disaster of this magnitude. I work for HandsOn Network in Atlanta and one of the areas we focus on is disaster relief. Most people would be sad to know that Atlanta has no evacuation plan, no plan for getting first responders to a central location & Lord knows we probably shouldn’t count on FEMA to make a timely appearance. It just might be time to start praying….in reverse!
